Another day in paradise, the bells of the iPhone, go off at 6:30 a.m. A quick get ready and devotion at 7 a.m. 7:30 a.m. is breakfast, always good, like all the other meals we have had so far. 8 a.m. at the work site, it is always a guess, as far as what we are going to do, but between Fabio the big kahuna and Antonio, the assistant, we all get our marching orders and Russ makes sure that we “work hard”. Today we laid bricks until about noon, lunchtime of course, and then when your stomach is nice and full, the sun is straight over your head and there is no shade, a big truck shows up with 4,000 bricks and several 20 feet bars of reinforced concrete to unload.
The girls showed off today by doing much of the heavy lifting, while some of the guys i.e., Sandro, pooped out. And the shorter they were, the tougher, they were. (For some reason he believes that it is more important to protect himself from another heart attack instead of keeping up with the work, go figure) Some of the other guys worked on the metal structure that will link the entire building together.
Breaks are always a welcome sight. This morning they brought watermelon from the kitchen, which hit the spot in the ninety plus degrees in the shade. In the afternoon, we had Brazilian coffee and panettone.
Just as work was over, a huge storm hit the area, and the temperature finally dropped. At dinner, we enjoyed a special dessert prepared by Sharon, Maxine, Lauren, and Juliana (local teen of the church) with the words “obrigado” (Portuguese for thank you) baked on top as a special thanks to our Brazilian hosts. As we type this, we hear some of the guys practicing for tomorrow night’s service, of which we are in charge. While the rest of us, partly because of the hard work, the heat, or the big dinner, are having a hard time keeping our eyes open. And tomorrow we will gladly do it all over again.
Sandro
